The Alert System

As noted, QuakeCasts uses a combination of GPS (and other satellite) signals and ground-based receivers coupled with ZIP code-based search functionality to determine precisely where we anticipate an earthquake will occur. This enables us to easily and quickly publish warnings to our website where subscribers can check for alerts for their region at no charge.

Additionally, those who are subscribed to our premium service (just $20 per year) will receive an SMS alert the moment such a prediction is made. This is the fastest and most convenient form of alert because it is mobile in nature. The typical QuakeCasts alert would read like the following:

ALERT! The QuakeCasts system predicts the likelihood of a magnitude 5 or higher earthquake in your area. Please take all necessary precautions for you and your family.

While there are no guarantees that we will correctly predict every earthquake, over time as more data is captured and earthquake events are studied, we are confident that our ability to correctly predict earthquakes of even smaller magnitudes will improve. The question no longer is ‘if,’ it is only ‘when.’
